Astronomers have revealed the unique structure of asteroid 44 Nysa
Astronomers have, for the first time, determined that asteroid 44 Nysa is composed of three distinct parts, making it unique among known asteroids. The origin of such a structure remains a mystery.

The Solar System contains a wide variety of celestial bodies, including asteroids. Recently, astronomers have, for the first time, observed an asteroid with an unusual shape.
Asteroid 44 Nysa was discovered in 1870 as a bright object in the sky. Despite observations using the Hubble Space Telescope, its shape remained a mystery for a long time.
Studies conducted with the Very Large Telescope and the Large Binocular Telescope revealed that 44 Nysa consists of three distinct parts. This makes it the first known asteroid with such a structure. The asteroid's diameter is approximately 75.6 kilometers (about 47 miles). In addition, a moon about one kilometer in diameter was found orbiting this object.
To study the asteroid, scientists used the Sphere and Shark-Vis instruments, which provided more accurate data on its size and structure.
There are several hypotheses regarding the asteroid's shape. One suggests that a collision with a larger asteroid in the past altered the structure of 44 Nysa. However, the origin of its unusual form remains unclear, and further research is needed to gain a more complete understanding.
