A new study has found that higher levels of theobromine—a compound found in cocoa—are associated with signs of slower biological aging. However, scientists emphasize that further research is needed before drawing definitive conclusions.

A study conducted by scientists from King’s College London has revealed a link between elevated levels of theobromine—a natural compound found in dark chocolate—and signs of slower biological aging. This discovery highlights theobromine as an unexpected factor influencing the aging processes in the human body.

Theobromine and Its Role in Slowing Aging

Theobromine, a plant compound present in cocoa, may help slow down certain markers of biological aging. In the study published on December 10 in the journal Aging, researchers analyzed theobromine levels in participants’ blood and compared these measurements with biological age markers determined from blood samples.

Biological age reflects the functional state of the body rather than simply the number of years lived. To assess it, scientists used methods such as DNA methylation analysis—chemical tags that change with age—and measured telomere length, the protective structures at the ends of chromosomes that naturally shorten over time and are linked to health risks.

Study Design and Key Findings

The research examined data from two European cohorts: 509 individuals from TwinsUK and 1,160 from KORA. Participants with higher theobromine levels in their blood generally had a biological age lower than their chronological age. The scientists also checked whether other cocoa or coffee metabolites showed similar patterns, but only theobromine demonstrated a specific association with slower aging.

Professor Jordana Bell, senior author of the study, noted: “Our results point to a connection between a key component of dark chocolate and the preservation of youthfulness. While we are not advocating for increased chocolate consumption, this research helps us understand how everyday foods may hold clues to a healthier, longer life.”

Mechanisms and Health Implications

Many plant compounds, known as alkaloids, can influence gene activity, regulating their function and supporting long-term health. Theobromine is one such alkaloid. Although it is toxic to dogs, it can be beneficial for humans, including reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. However, until now, theobromine has remained relatively understudied.

Dr. Rami Saad, lead researcher, emphasized: “This is an intriguing discovery, and the next important question is what underlies this connection and how we can further explore the interaction between dietary metabolites and our epigenome. Such an approach could lead to significant breakthroughs in aging and other diseases.”

Currently, the team, which includes Professor Anna Rodriguez-Mateos, is investigating whether theobromine’s effect occurs independently or in combination with other beneficial components of dark chocolate, such as polyphenols.

Why More Chocolate Isn’t the Answer

Dr. Ricardo Costeira commented: “The study reveals another molecular mechanism by which natural cocoa compounds may support health. Despite the promising results, further research is needed to fully understand how theobromine interacts with the body and affects aging processes.”

Researchers stress that increasing dark chocolate consumption is not necessarily beneficial, as chocolate also contains sugar, fat, and other ingredients. More data is needed on the effects of theobromine on the human body before drawing definitive conclusions.
