An innovative opera house with a park will be built in Hamburg.
A new cultural center is set to open in Hamburg—the State Opera, which will bring together opera and ballet performances, a park, and an innovative architectural landscape. The BIG project combines eco-friendly solutions, flood protection, and contemporary design.

Apparently, one impressive concert hall in Hamburg was not enough. Despite the city already boasting the world-famous Elbphilharmonie—one of the most renowned concert venues globally—plans are now underway to build a second major musical landmark. The architectural firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) has unveiled a design for the new State Opera, which will combine opportunities for park strolls and ballet performances within the same grounds.
A New Cultural Center on the Waterfront
The future Hamburg State Opera will serve as a home for both opera productions and the Hamburg Ballet. The building will be located on the city’s developing waterfront and, with its exterior, will evoke the image of a ship. BIG’s architects describe it as an island with concentric terraces radiating from a central musical core, much like sound waves. This design will allow visitors not only to enjoy the natural landscape but also to peek behind the scenes and discover the inner workings of the theater.
Eco-Friendly Landscape and Protection from the Elements
BIG notes that the park’s shape is inspired by the movement of water. The landscape, designed by BIG Landscape, protects the area from storm surges with sloped terraces, overgrown dunes, and marsh gardens that slow down and absorb water flow. Special pools will collect rainwater, creating habitats for amphibians, aquatic plants, and local species. This blend of sustainable vegetation, tidal zones, and permeable surfaces supports biodiversity and creates a living landscape that can adapt to the changing rhythms of the Elbe River.
Architectural Features and Interior Spaces
While the exterior emphasizes a lush park area, wood will also be a prominent feature inside the building. The main hall will be situated at the heart of the complex and will consist of concentric wooden rings forming the auditorium and its balconies. This structure will provide excellent acoustics and clear views of the stage for the audience.
Stone pathways from the park will lead directly into the main lobby, where two large central wooden staircases will be located. All main floors will have direct access to open terraces, which can be used for events or informal relaxation in good weather.
Prospects for Realization
The design of the new Hamburg State Opera was awarded to BIG following an international architectural competition. It is not yet known when the building will open its doors to its first visitors. This project will add to the studio’s portfolio, which already includes other iconic music venues such as the Vltava Philharmonic and the National Theatre of Albania.
