Nvidia Expands Its Presence in Autonomous Driving and Enters the Orbital Data Center Market
Expanding Partnerships in the Automotive Sector
Nvidia is actively attracting leading electric vehicle manufacturers and ridesharing services as clients for its autonomous driving system. The company has signed agreements with major automakers and service providers, including BYD, Hyundai, Kia, and Uber. At the GTC 2026 event, Nvidia unveiled an expanded list of partners for its Drive Hyperion platform, intensifying competition with Tesla in the robotaxi segment.
Uber plans to deploy 100,000 Level 4 autonomous vehicles across 28 countries on four continents, starting with San Francisco and Los Angeles in early 2027.
Alpamayo: Technological Features
Unlike Tesla, which uses its proprietary vertically integrated FSD system, Nvidia offers an open Physical AI ecosystem based on Alpamayo 1.5. This system utilizes a Vision-Language-Action (VLA) model with 10 billion parameters, designed for interactive control and advanced reasoning.
Impact on the Autonomous Transport Market
A significant portion of Tesla’s market capitalization is tied to its leadership in autonomous driving and robotaxi technology. Widespread adoption of Nvidia’s technologies, especially among clients like Uber and BYD, could influence Tesla’s position in this sector.
Entering the Orbital Data Center Market
Nvidia has also announced plans to produce AI chips for orbital data centers. These solutions are designed to process data directly in orbit, reducing latency associated with transmitting raw data back to Earth. Nvidia’s Vera Rubin Space-1 chips are intended for use in space infrastructures where efficient data processing and autonomous operation are essential.
SpaceX previously revealed intentions to deploy AI data center infrastructure in space to harness solar energy without burdening terrestrial power grids. In the absence of conduction and convection in space, both companies face the challenge of developing effective cooling systems for their equipment.
Competition and Outlook
Nvidia positions itself as a provider of computing solutions for various orbital startups, including Planet Labs and NASA. Companies in this field can either develop their own AI chips or use Nvidia’s solutions to manufacture specialized space processors.
Nvidia continues to strengthen its position in key technology sectors, expanding its partner network and offering new solutions for autonomous transport and space-based computing.
