€13 billion — Google’s largest investment in a European country
Google has announced a €13 billion investment in Finland, marking the company’s biggest commitment in the European region. The agreement covers not only the construction of new data centers, but also the development of a comprehensive infrastructure ecosystem for artificial intelligence, including energy, networks, and energy storage systems. The project aims to create thousands of jobs, launch educational programs, and support other initiatives.
Why Finland Was Chosen
Finland was selected due to its high-capacity power grid, low-carbon electricity, and promising prospects for further development of the energy sector. The country is implementing a mixed energy strategy, which includes a 22-year agreement to extend the operation of the Loviisa nuclear power plant and the potential construction of new nuclear reactors at the site. There are also plans to introduce 629 MW of new onshore wind power, which will support the operation of a 94 MW energy storage system.
Energy Usage
The generated energy will be used to power artificial intelligence data centers and their data storage systems.
Impact on Finland’s Economy
The investment is expected to significantly boost the development of Finland’s energy and digital infrastructure, as well as create new jobs. During the initial construction phase in 2027–2028, up to 37,000 jobs could be created, bringing Finland an additional €3.6 billion in annual economic impact. After construction is completed, thousands of local jobs are expected to be maintained.
Social Initiatives
Google is allocating €31 million over four years to support communities in Hamina, Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala. Part of the funding will go toward education, upskilling in artificial intelligence, and student training. The company also plans to support local initiatives, including the installation of energy storage systems and heat pumps in schools and sports centers.
