The Trump administration has launched a reform of the government agency responsible for overseeing risks in the financial system, aiming to focus on stimulating economic growth and reducing regulatory burdens. This was announced on Thursday by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
According to Bessent, the Financial Stability Oversight Council (FSOC), which was established after the 2008 financial crisis, is shifting its priorities and will now pay more attention to easing financial regulations. The Treasury Secretary, who chairs the council, emphasized that excessive regulatory costs can themselves pose a threat to economic growth.
As part of these changes, FSOC will create new working groups to address issues of market resilience and the financial stability of households. Another group will analyze the opportunities and risks associated with the development of artificial intelligence.
Bessent announced the upcoming reforms on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), ahead of a scheduled FSOC meeting that he will chair.
