Google Gemini stores chats for up to three years
After switching to Gemini, all user queries are saved in the activity section, and chats reviewed by moderators can be stored for up to three years. Even after deleting your history, some data may remain inaccessible to the user but is still retained by Google.
Crius
After switching to Gemini, all user queries are saved in the Gemini Apps Activity section. Chats that have been reviewed by moderators are stored for up to three years. Starting September 4, Google began removing Assistant from Android devices, replacing it with Gemini. In the Gemini app, the Keep Activity feature is enabled by default for users over 18. Some chats are sent for review to Google employees and trained external specialists, and copies of these chats are retained even after the history is deleted, with a retention period of up to three years.
Data Storage and Deletion
Every query is logged in the user's activity journal. This log includes prompts, transcripts of Gemini Live conversations, approximate device location, and information about how the product is used. Google automatically deletes these records after 18 months, but users can change the retention period to 3 or 36 months or disable automatic deletion altogether.
Disabling the Keep Activity feature does not immediately erase all data. Even when the feature is off, Google keeps conversations in your account for up to 72 hours for processing, feedback, and service protection. The same retention period applies to temporary chats.
Data Review by Moderators
Some conversations are sent for review by teams of moderators, which include Google employees and trained specialists. Before review, the data is disconnected from the user's account. Chats reviewed by moderators, as well as related data (such as language, device type, location information, and feedback), are not deleted when you clear your activity and are stored for up to three years. Clearing your history only removes data from your account page; copies reviewed by moderators remain.
Audio Recording Storage Features
By default, audio recordings, videos, and screen demonstrations from Gemini Live are not used to improve Google services. However, transcripts of these conversations fall under the Keep Activity feature: the voice itself is not saved, but the text transcript is.
Transferring Data from Assistant
Users who used Assistant for calls or messages can transfer old records to the new app. Up to 90 days of Assistant query history can be imported from Web and App Activity into Gemini Apps Activity, but this option is not available in all regions.
Managing Settings
Activity management settings are found in the Gemini app under the user's avatar, in the activity section. In a browser, use the site myactivity.google.com for this purpose. Here you can disable Keep Activity, change the data retention period, and clear your existing history. It is recommended to first disable the feature and then delete your history. Data reviewed by moderators will remain inaccessible to the user regardless of actions taken in the account.
Impact on App Functionality
Disabling the Keep Activity feature affects Gemini's performance: the app loses memory of previous chats, and some related services, such as Google Workspace, may become unavailable. After switching to Gemini, it is not possible to return to the old Assistant—it can no longer be activated.
