The tallest wooden skyscraper has been built in Sydney.
The construction of the world's tallest hybrid timber skyscraper, Atlassian Central, has been completed in Sydney. Standing at 180 meters, the building combines wood, concrete, and steel, significantly reducing its carbon footprint and increasing energy efficiency by 50% compared to conventional towers.

The tallest hybrid wooden skyscraper in the world has reached its final height. The Atlassian Central building, located in Sydney’s emerging district in Australia, now stands at 180 meters—more than double the previous record for wooden towers, which was set by the 86.6-meter Ascent building in Milwaukee.
Architectural Features
The project was designed by the architectural firms SHoP Architects and BVN Architecture. The building’s structure combines a concrete core, a steel exoskeleton, and around 10,000 cubic meters of engineered timber, primarily in the form of glued wooden columns and cross-laminated panels.
This hybrid construction approach, which uses a mix of concrete, steel, and timber, is being adopted in several modern high-rise projects. This method provides the necessary structural strength, speeds up construction, and reduces the overall carbon footprint. According to the developers, the project aims to cut material-related carbon emissions by 50% compared to conventional commercial towers, while also improving operational energy efficiency by 50%.
Interior Space and Infrastructure
The building features 39 floors, most of which are designated for office use. There is a four-story coworking zone designed to maximize access to natural light and ventilation. The complex will also include a hostel and several garden terraces, including a rooftop garden. An existing building on the site will be restored and integrated as part of the lobby.
Environmental and Technological Solutions
The construction uses hybrid mass timber, which helps reduce the carbon footprint and allows for prefabricated elements, dry assembly, and accelerated vertical growth of the building. The exterior facade will be equipped with solar panels and an automated cooling system.
Construction Completion
After the installation of the main structural frame, work continues on the remaining parts of the skyscraper, including the installation of a high-tech facade. Construction is expected to be fully completed by the end of the year.
