Ineos has announced the start of a partnership with Sandpiper Chemicals, a Houston-based company, to build a plant for the production of low-carbon methanol with an annual capacity of 1.1 million tons. The new facility is planned to be located at the Ineos site in Texas City on the Gulf Coast in the United States.
Under the agreement, the British multinational company will become a shareholder and the main customer of Sandpiper, committing to purchase up to 300,000 tons of low-carbon methanol annually for the production of acetic acid.
The project is estimated to cost around $1.7 billion. The final investment decision is expected next year, with production scheduled to begin in 2030.
Low-carbon methanol is considered an important fuel and feedstock for the maritime, chemical, and energy sectors. The implementation of this project will allow Ineos to strengthen its position in the global sustainable fuels market and gain both economic and environmental advantages.
To equip the plant, Sandpiper has engaged the Danish technology company Topsoe, which will supply equipment for carbon capture. The plan is to capture and store 97% of emissions generated during methanol production from natural gas.
