Gentle handling reduces stress in chicks.

Gentle handling reduces stress in chicks.

The study showed that chicks experience positive emotions from gentle handling, which reduces their stress and promotes better growth and immunity. Treating birds kindly is beneficial not only from an ethical standpoint but also from a practical perspective.

CursusGentle handling reduces stress in chicks.

Even chicks are capable of experiencing positive emotions from gentle human interaction, as demonstrated by research conducted by specialists from the University of Bristol. Their study showed that calm and friendly treatment of birds is not only ethical but can also be practically beneficial.

Emotional State of Farm Animals

It is commonly believed that domestic animals such as cats and dogs can form attachments to humans and enjoy social interaction. For a long time, however, it was thought that the behavior of farm animals was determined solely by instincts and reflexes. Yet, the well-being of billions of birds on farms is directly linked to their emotional state. In animal husbandry, it is well known that rough handling negatively affects birds’ health, reduces egg production, and slows growth. An important question remains: how do chicks themselves perceive different forms of human interaction—whether it is roughness or care? The answer to this question is crucial not only from a humane perspective but also for developing effective farming methods that foster trust between birds and humans.

Experimental Methodology

The study used a conditioned place preference method. The idea is that if an animal enjoys being in a certain place, it will try to return there even after the source of pleasant sensations is gone.

Twenty chicks participated in the experiment. A box with two compartments—one orange and one blue—was prepared for them. First, researchers observed which color the chicks preferred without any external influence and found that they liked the orange compartment more.

Then, over 12 days, each chick was alternately placed in both compartments. In one of them, the bird received gentle attention: the researcher would open the door, stroke its back, and speak softly and calmly. In the other compartment, a person was present but remained motionless, avoided eye contact, and stayed silent. To rule out the influence of color, for half of the chicks the “pleasant” compartment was orange, and for the other half it was blue. Thus, the final choice was determined not by an innate color preference, but by associations formed with that place.

Observation Results

With each session, the chicks became more receptive to being petted. While at first about a third of the birds were wary, by the end of the experiment, 95% calmly allowed themselves to be stroked. Many chicks even began to fall asleep in the researcher’s hands, indicating a sense of safety and comfort. Moreover, in the “pleasant” compartment, the chicks made significantly fewer distress calls compared to the compartment where the person was passive.

After the series of sessions, the chicks were placed back in the box with two compartments, but this time without any humans present. The birds could move freely, guided only by memory and emotions. It was noted that the chicks spent noticeably more time in the compartment previously associated with gentle treatment, though they did not avoid the “neutral” compartment.

Study Conclusions

The data obtained indicate that gentle handling of chicks elicits genuine positive emotions, not just a reduction in fear. A positive affective state is formed: if a chick perceives a human as a source of pleasant sensations from an early age, rather than as a threat, its level of chronic stress decreases. This helps strengthen immunity, improve growth, and increase the productivity of the birds.
