In the future, Motorola smartphones will come with the open-source GrapheneOS operating system pre-installed, which could make them more appealing to users who prioritize data protection and privacy.
The company has announced a partnership with GrapheneOS. Selected Motorola smartphone models are expected to offer GrapheneOS as an alternative to the standard Android system. The main focus is on enhancing security and privacy measures.
GrapheneOS is an open-source operating system based on the Android Open Source Project. This ensures compatibility with most standard Android apps. By default, the system does not include Google services and offers a range of additional security features, such as advanced permission controls for network and sensor access. GrapheneOS can automatically hide sensitive information in screenshots, and USB-C ports can be disabled or limited to charging only to prevent attacks via compromised cables.
The system supports up to 32 user profiles, which is significantly more than the standard four profiles available in Android. This can be especially useful for corporate devices shared by multiple employees.
Motorola also plans to introduce a feature for automatically removing personal metadata, such as GPS coordinates, from photos. This option will also become available on Motorola Signature smartphones through an update to the Moto Secure app.
At this time, it has not been specified which Motorola smartphone models will be the first to support GrapheneOS.
