Glass House with a Thatched Roof: Comfort and Style
A new guest house in Ukraine proves that glass architecture can be not only striking but also cozy. The project blends modern technologies with traditional motifs, creating a space that offers both comfort and privacy.
Aedis
We often admire glass houses, even though most of them are hardly practical. However, the recently completed project "Guesthouse Under the Reed Roof" in Ukraine proves that a glass house can be not only beautiful but also cozy and comfortable to live in.
Architectural Concept
The complex consists of three identical vacation houses situated on private land. Let’s take a closer look at one of them: with an area of 50 square meters, it strikes a balance between a tiny home and a small house. The architecture draws inspiration from traditional Ukrainian mud huts but is executed in a modern style. The house stands on a stone foundation, and its perimeter walls are made entirely of glass. Topping it all is a neatly crafted, expansive reed roof, while inside, the ceiling is adorned with elegant wooden panels.
A Modern Take on Tradition
Designers note that Ukrainian folk architecture has always stood out for its simple yet expressive solutions: thick whitewashed walls, reed roofs, and regular whitewashing as a symbol of care and order. In this project, the pursuit of light and purity is reflected in the fully transparent glass facades, while the oversized roof becomes the main architectural highlight.
Interior Space and Privacy
One of the main questions that arises with glass houses is: where can you find privacy? In this home, the bathroom is hidden within a central concrete block, shielded from prying eyes. On either side of this block are the bedroom and the living room. The living room features a fireplace and a relaxation area, with the main focus on panoramic views rather than a television. The bedroom is equipped with remote-controlled curtains to ensure privacy and darkness when needed. There is also a small kitchen with a refrigerator, kettle, and coffee machine.
Comfort All Year Round
Another challenge of glass houses is maintaining a comfortable temperature. Here, a heat pump system with discreet air conditioning has been installed, and in winter, the fireplace provides extra warmth.
This project demonstrates that a glass house can be not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional, blending modern technology with respect for tradition.
