The owner's voice affects the physical condition of dogs.

A new study has shown that the emotional tone of the human voice affects the physical state of dogs, triggering involuntary physiological responses related to their balance and stability.

It is well known that dogs can recognize their owners' emotions by the tone of their voice. Recent studies by Austrian scientists have shown that animals respond to an angry or joyful voice not only emotionally, but also physiologically—for example, this can manifest as a disruption of their physical stability.

How Dogs Perceive Human Emotions

For a long time, scientists have studied how animals, especially dogs, recognize human emotions, mainly by observing their behavior—such as head tilts or tail wagging. Neurobiological research has revealed that a gentle tone activates areas of the dog's brain associated with pleasure and social bonding. However, until recently, it was unclear exactly how an owner's manner of communication affects the pet's physical state.

The Austrian Scientists' Experiment

Researchers at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna conducted a study with 23 dogs of various breeds to find out how the tone of a human voice influences their biomechanics. They used a parameter called the center of pressure (COP), which reflects the functioning of the postural control system—signals from muscles, the vestibular apparatus, and the brain. Previous studies had shown that emotionally charged sounds can affect stability in humans, and now scientists wanted to see if a similar connection exists in dogs.

During the experiment, each dog was placed on a special platform that measured pressure, and three conditions were tested: a recording of a joyful voice, a recording of an angry voice (both in a language unfamiliar to the animal, using the phrase "come here"), and silence. Five key parameters of COP fluctuations were analyzed, the main one being the area of sway—a direct indicator of postural stability.

Study Results

The main parameter showed that when listening to an angry voice, dogs became less stable compared to silence, indicating a destabilization of balance. Analysis of other parameters revealed that 43% of dogs improved their stability in response to a joyful voice, while 57% showed decreased stability.

The authors of the study believe that these differences may be related to the individual experiences of the animals. The most significant changes, both absolute and relative, were recorded in response to the angry voice, suggesting its strongest destabilizing effect. Even if a dog does not outwardly show fear or submission, its body may still experience stress, which is reflected in a loss of balance.

The Significance of the Results

The study demonstrated that the emotional tone of a human voice triggers an involuntary physiological reaction in dogs, affecting basic mechanisms of physical control. This means that an animal does not simply "like" or "dislike" its owner's voice—it experiences a deep process that influences muscle tone and coordination.

Prospects for Further Research

In the future, scientists plan to investigate the role of other factors in this process: the dog's age, breed, history of interactions with a particular person, as well as comparing biomechanical data with other physiological indicators, such as heart rate.
