Apple is expected to unveil new smart home devices in October, including an updated HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K, and the HomePad hub. According to recent reports, these products are scheduled for release on October 13. This expansion of Apple’s smart home lineup is being led by John Ternus. The company aims to strengthen its position in the smart home market—where it has previously lagged behind Amazon and Google—by leveraging enhanced Siri artificial intelligence capabilities.
New HomePad Devices
The main focus will be on a smart home hub with the internal code name J490, which is expected to be called HomePad. The device will be available in two versions: a desktop and a wall-mounted model, both requiring a connection to the power grid.
Design Features
Earlier reports mentioned a 7-inch display, but new information points to a square 6-inch screen with a design reminiscent of the 2002 iMac G4. The display will be about as thick as an iPhone and will feature wide bezels around the edges. The device’s round base will have several rows of perforated holes for speakers and a polished metal stand to support the display.
The wall-mounted version, code-named J491, will feature a slim square base with speakers and microphones positioned beneath the display.
Functionality
Both HomePad versions are designed for use by multiple family members, recognizing each user’s presence and voice to display personalized content. There will also be a guest mode that hides personal information. The device will be able to control compatible smart home elements such as thermostats and locks, and will support FaceTime video calls via the front-facing camera.
Development Prospects
A third, larger, and adjustable version of the device is in development, featuring a 9-inch display mounted on a robotic arm capable of rotating 360 degrees.
Software
The interface of the new devices will be modeled after the recently introduced StandBy Mode for iPhone Duo. There will also be support for iPhone widgets and frequently used apps from the Apple ecosystem.
