A 63-year-old operations geologist working for Amplitude Energy, a company specializing in oil and gas exploration, was killed in a shark attack off the coast of Western Australia on Friday.
The incident occurred at Sorrento Beach, not far from Perth. The victim had served as an operations geologist at Amplitude Energy for many years.
Amplitude Energy is listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) and is implementing the East Coast Supply Project (ECSP), which aims to boost domestic gas production. As part of the ECSP, drilling operations have been carried out, and the launch of production at the Athena gas plant in Victoria is scheduled for 2028.
The Western Australia Department of Fisheries reported that after the attack, the shark was positively identified and a permit was issued for its destruction if captured. However, on Monday, the state's Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development called off the search due to a lack of shark activity and the low likelihood of capture.
Amplitude Energy expressed its condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased employee.
