Apple A20 Pro: A Breakthrough in Performance and AI
Apple has introduced the A20 Pro processor for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, featuring a revamped architecture, enhanced graphics performance, and a doubled Neural Engine. The significant boost in processing power and memory promises noticeable improvements, but the real advantages will be revealed through independent testing.
Crius
Apple has unveiled its new flagship processor, the A20 Pro, which powers the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models. This year, the chip has received significant upgrades across nearly all major computing components, including a new CPU architecture, an enhanced GPU, a doubled Neural Engine, and substantially higher memory bandwidth. It has been confirmed that the A20 Pro is manufactured using a 2-nanometer process, though specific details remain undisclosed. Earlier reports indicated that it uses TSMC’s basic N2 node, while competing processors like the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro will be produced on the more advanced N2P node. The real-world advantages of these solutions will become clear after further testing.
Architecture and Computing Units
The A20 Pro retains a six-core CPU architecture, featuring two “Super” cores paired with four energy-efficient cores. The “Super” cores are positioned as desktop-class solutions, first introduced in the recently announced M6 processor. The graphics processor now boasts seven cores, one more than last year’s A19 Pro. Apple claims up to a 40% increase in graphics performance.
Memory Bandwidth and Neural Engine
Memory bandwidth has increased by 50% compared to the previous generation. According to available information, the A20 Pro uses a 96-bit LPDDR5X interface instead of the 64-bit interface found in the A19 Pro, although the official bus width has not been disclosed. The Neural Engine has also been doubled, now featuring 32 cores versus 16 in its predecessor. Combined with neural accelerators within the GPU, AI computations are distributed across more parts of the SoC.
Performance and Battery Life
According to Apple, the iPhone 18 Pro with the A20 Pro processor delivers 40% higher sustained performance compared to the iPhone 17 Pro with the A19 Pro, and twice the performance of the iPhone 16 Pro with the A18 Pro. However, these figures are based on internal company data, and independent testing is needed for confirmation.
The iPhone 18 Pro is rated for up to 36 hours of video playback, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max can reach up to 45 hours. These results are influenced by battery capacity and other platform changes, so they cannot be attributed solely to the A20 Pro processor.
