An employee passed away after losing consciousness on August 28 at the premises of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, a shipbuilding and marine company in Ulsan, South Korea.
The police and the Ministry of Employment and Labor are conducting an on-site investigation and reviewing the relevant documentation. At this time, it has not been determined whether the incident will be classified as a serious industrial accident under the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
On August 30, Hyundai received an order for the partial suspension of work involving all type “A” ladders, issued by the Eastern Ulsan branch of the Busan Regional Employment and Labor Office. Should new circumstances arise during the investigation, the company plans to release an updated statement.
According to local media, the worker, who was employed by a partner company and was in the Hanuri Hall complex, was taken to the hospital, where he later died.
This incident is the latest in a series of fatal accidents at Hyundai’s shipyards in Ulsan and Gunsan, as well as at its subsidiary, HD Hyundai Marine & Structure Company (formerly HD Hyundai Mipo). In July, the company’s domestic shipyards observed a three-day shutdown to conduct special safety training and inspect all work sites.
Earlier this month, South Korea’s Ministry of Labor launched a thorough inspection following a series of workplace accidents.
