The AJS Leten LT190 is a versatile motorcycle with an automatic transmission, designed for beginners and former scooter owners. This model combines easy handling with modern features, making it ideal for riding on country roads.
Vectus
If a scooter owner is considering moving up to a full-fledged motorcycle—be it a road, touring, cruiser, or entry-level sport model—this transition can seem significant. The British company AJS targets this segment, offering solutions for those seeking an easy way to switch vehicle classes.
New AJS Models
Previously, the company introduced the Imber 125, a model conceptually similar to the Honda Trail 125, but it never reached the market due to non-compliance with European environmental standards. After making improvements, AJS has released two new models: the Leten LT190 and the Ridgeway 125. Currently, detailed information is available mainly about the Leten LT190.
Leten LT190 Technical Specifications
The Leten LT190 is equipped with a liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine with a displacement of 188 cc, delivering 18.5 hp at 8,000 rpm. This is more than double the power of the Imber 125 and provides ample performance for a versatile vehicle designed for country roads, off-road trails, and trips outside the city.
A key feature of the model is its automatic CVT transmission with a belt-and-chain drive, making it easier to operate for those accustomed to scooters. There are no clutch or gear shift levers in the design.
The engine uses piston rings with a diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating, which helps with efficient heat dissipation, reduces friction, and increases durability. Similar technologies are found in most modern sport motorcycles.
Chassis and Equipment
The engine is mounted on a double steel tubular frame. The suspension features a conventional front fork and rear gas shock absorbers with five-stage adjustment. The braking system includes disc brakes on both wheels and dual-channel ABS.
The motorcycle comes with 17-inch aluminum wheels fitted with tubeless tires. Standard features include heated grips, keyless start, a TFT display, and a USB port. For off-road riding, the ABS and traction control system can be disabled.
Ergonomics and Practicality
The seat height is 790 mm, and the curb weight is 149 kg, making the model suitable for shorter and less experienced riders. Fuel consumption is 3.14 liters per 100 km, with a 9-liter fuel tank. The maximum load capacity is 150 kg, allowing for luggage transport. The rear passenger seat folds up to reveal a luggage compartment and also serves as a backrest.
Price and Market
The Leten LT190 is priced at £3,495 (approximately $4,690). The model is aimed at the UK market and is unlikely to be available in North America.
Target Audience
The Leten LT190 is not intended for seasoned travelers who use large touring motorcycles like the Africa Twin or V-Strom. Instead, it fills a niche for those who appreciate the practicality of a scooter but want to experience the capabilities of a motorcycle on country roads. The automatic transmission simplifies handling, while the appearance and riding position are similar to touring models.
The Leten LT190 is designed for users who want to explore new routes without the complications of a manual clutch and prefer comfort and versatility.
