The ChatGPT Atlas browser will be discontinued in August 2026.
The ChatGPT Atlas browser will be discontinued on August 9, 2026, and its main features will be integrated into the new ChatGPT desktop application. Users are advised to export their data in advance and avoid using Atlas after support ends due to potential security risks.
Crius
If you are using ChatGPT Atlas, please note that support for this browser will end on August 9, 2026. After this date, Atlas may stop launching or functioning altogether. The end of support was announced on July 9, and users have been given an approximately 30-day transition period.
Atlas was released for Mac on October 21, 2025, and was built on Google Chromium with integrated ChatGPT features. As a result, its lifespan was less than ten months.
User Data
After Atlas is discontinued, no user data will be transferred automatically. This includes bookmarks, open tabs, and browsing history. To save your bookmarks, you need to export them from Atlas in HTML format and then import them into another browser, such as Chrome, via the “More” menu — “Bookmarks and Lists” — “Import bookmarks and settings.” It is recommended to save open tabs as bookmarks or copy their URLs into a separate document. The same steps are required to preserve your browsing history.
Cookies and active sessions cannot be transferred to other browsers. Cookies are small files that allow websites to recognize users without requiring them to log in again. OpenAI allows cookie export where possible, but warns that sharing these files with others is unsafe, as it may lead to unauthorized access. After Atlas is closed, you will need to log in again on all websites.
Your ChatGPT conversations are stored in your account and are not dependent on the browser.
Security and Future Use
Using Atlas after support ends is not recommended, as browsers require regular security updates. Without these updates, the risk of data leaks increases, since browsers have access to all viewed pages and entered passwords. In practice, there have already been cases where vulnerabilities in AI integrations allowed websites to secretly send commands or read users’ conversations.
Feature Migration
Atlas features are not disappearing entirely. The agent mode, which allows the assistant to perform actions in the browser autonomously, will be moved to the new ChatGPT desktop app. This app is expected to support multiple tabs, downloads, and account logins. Chrome users can also access the ChatGPT extension and sidebar.
Reasons for Discontinuation
Maintaining a proprietary browser proved to be too resource-intensive for OpenAI. The main features will remain available, but a separate application to support them will no longer be maintained.
