A recent technical failure in the Xbox Series X|S ecosystem affected users worldwide, including owners of physical discs that typically function offline. The Xbox server outage made it impossible for many players to launch offline games from physical media. Although services were restored within a day, the incident raised concerns about the future of physical game discs.
Microsoft stated that physical discs were not supposed to be impacted by the outage. Xbox representatives explained that the issue was caused by a failure in an external licensing service that the console relies on. This led to errors when logging into the system, launching purchased games, and displaying the user's library, where license verification is required.
Work is currently underway to prevent similar situations in the future. It was noted that offline mode is designed to use locally stored licenses, which should allow games to run from discs without an internet connection.
Xbox uses Smart Delivery technology, which automatically installs the appropriate version of a game based on the hardware. Physical discs fully support this technology, enabling all necessary executable files to be stored directly on the disc. As a result, launching a game from a disc should not require a connection to Xbox services or the internet. However, during the recent outage, this system failed.
The company acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and emphasized that steps are being taken to improve user support and prevent similar issues in the future.
