BP has increased oil production at the Atlantis platform.
BP has completed the expansion of the Atlantis platform in the Gulf of Mexico ahead of schedule and at lower costs, which will allow oil production to increase by 10,000 barrels per day. This project strengthens the company's position in the region and extends the operational life of one of its key assets.
Petrus
BP has begun production at the expanded Atlantis platform in the US Gulf of Mexico ahead of schedule and at a lower cost than originally anticipated.
Increased Production
With the expansion, the platform can now deliver an additional 10,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, of which approximately 5,000 barrels per day are attributed to BP as the operator.
Field Characteristics
The Atlantis field is located at a depth of 7,074 feet, about 240 kilometers off the coast of New Orleans, and has been in operation for nearly twenty years.
Technical Upgrades
As part of the expansion, two new subsea wells were added for water injection to boost pressure in the target reservoirs, and new water injection pumps were installed on the platform topsides. These upgrades will help increase production volumes in the future and extend the operational life of one of BP’s key offshore assets in the US.
New Projects
BP recently approved the construction of two new production platforms—Kaskida and Tiber. By the end of 2030, these are expected to add up to 160,000 barrels per day of new offshore oil production capacity in the US.
Current Assets
Currently, BP operates five deepwater platforms in the US Gulf of Mexico: Thunder Horse, Argos, Mad Dog, Na Kika, and Atlantis, which was commissioned in 1998.
Ownership Structure
BP holds a 56% stake in the Atlantis project and serves as the operator, while the sole partner is Australia’s Woodside Energy with a 44% share.
The Significance of Atlantis
The Atlantis platform has remained one of BP’s key assets in the Gulf of Mexico for nearly two decades. The recent expansion confirms that the field’s potential is far from exhausted.
