BYD enters the Japanese kei car market with the Racco electric vehicle
Entering the Japanese Kei Car Market
For many years, BYD has been trying to break into the Japanese automotive market, which is dominated by local manufacturers and compact cars. Recently, BYD unveiled its first electric vehicle designed specifically for Japan—the Racco model, created for the kei car segment.
The Importance of the Kei Car Segment
The Racco marks the first time a Chinese automaker has introduced a model in the highly protected segment of Japan’s auto industry. Kei cars account for about 40% of new car sales in Japan, thanks to tax incentives and their practicality in densely built cities, narrow streets, and limited parking spaces. To succeed in Japan, manufacturers must develop vehicles that meet these specific requirements.
Features of the BYD Racco
The BYD Racco meets kei car standards: length—3,395 mm, width—1,475 mm, height—1,800 mm. It belongs to the “super height wagon” category and competes with models like the Honda N-BOX and Suzuki Spacia. Its WLTC range is around 320 km, which surpasses the Nissan Sakura (180 km) and slightly exceeds the upcoming Honda N-ONE e.
Price and Charging
After applying Japanese EV subsidies, the BYD Racco costs about $12,200, making it more affordable than most key competitors. The battery is optimized for city driving: a full charge from a standard Japanese 100V outlet takes about six hours, and fast DC charging is also supported. The model is targeted at regions in Japan where kei cars are especially popular.
Promotion and Dealership Network
To promote the Racco, BYD is using local celebrities in its advertising campaigns. Currently, the company has about 80 dealerships in Japan, while local brands have thousands. For a successful launch, BYD will need extensive local advertising and to expand its dealer network. The Racco’s main advantages are its driving range, spacious interior, and affordable price, but the availability of showrooms will be a crucial factor for the success of BYD’s first kei car in Japan.
