Smartphones with a 16:10 Aspect Ratio: A New Trend in the Market
Changes in Smartphone Display Formats
The smartphone industry is witnessing a shift in screen formats. Currently, most devices feature displays with an aspect ratio of around 19.5:9. Foldable models are an exception, often sporting elongated 21:9 external screens. However, these displays are gradually being replaced by wider options with an aspect ratio close to 16:10, as seen in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the upcoming iPhone Ultra. Similar changes are expected to reach classic monoblock smartphones as well.
Manufacturers’ Plans and New Models
Images and information about a potentially wider Oppo Find W smartphone have surfaced online, with a possible launch alongside the Oppo Find X10 Ultra in early 2027. Previously, such leaks were considered entertainment content, but discussions about the 16:10 format for future devices continue across various platforms.
Spread of the Trend Among Manufacturers
The current trend for foldable devices with wider yet compact form factors, like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, may soon be adopted by companies such as Xiaomi, Oppo, and Honor. The 16:10-like format was previously found only in select foldable models, but now it could also appear in classic monoblock smartphones.
Oppo’s History of Format Changes
In 2022, the Oppo Find N2 stood out with its 18:9 aspect ratio, making it noticeably wider than the more elongated Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 (23.1:9). In subsequent years, Oppo shifted to the standard, more elongated foldable format. The first Google Pixel Fold also featured a wider screen compared to its competitors. Now, Oppo is reportedly considering a smartphone with a 16:10 display measuring about 6.3–6.4 inches.
Prospects for Mass Adoption
At present, mass production of monoblock smartphones with a 16:10 aspect ratio has not yet begun. It remains to be seen how convenient this format will be for users, especially when operating the device with one hand.
