Gamers are choosing expensive digital editions of games
PlayStation Store users are increasingly opting for premium digital editions of games that include additional content, such as GTA 6 Ultimate Edition. This trend is generating higher revenues for publishers and further strengthening the position of digital formats in the market.

Leading positions in PlayStation Store pre-orders are held by expensive digital editions of games, such as GTA 6 Ultimate Edition. Users are increasingly opting for versions priced above $60, with the GTA 6 Ultimate Edition at $100 topping the popularity charts thanks to its additional content. Digital versions generate more revenue for publishers compared to disc-based options for PS5, especially when it comes to deluxe editions.
Rising Demand for Premium Digital Editions
Even before GTA 6 pre-orders began, it was expected that the game would be priced above the standard rate. Despite the $100 price tag for the Ultimate Edition, this version is in high demand on the PlayStation Store. This trend is also seen with other games: buyers are willing to pay more for expanded digital editions.
Across various regions, the most expensive version of GTA 6 for PS5 leads in pre-order numbers. The standard edition at $80 also performs well, but is outpaced in popularity by Halo: Campaign Evolved at $70 and Marvel’s Wolverine at $80. Premium and deluxe editions of these games are also outperforming more affordable alternatives priced at $50–70.
The sequel to GTA 5 shows that many players prefer editions with extra content. For an additional $20, the Ultimate Edition offers exclusive weapons, vehicles, and cosmetic items. The lack of a physical copy also influences choices: cheaper boxed code versions are less in demand.
Consumer Preferences and the Impact of Digital Formats
For Marvel’s Wolverine, users can purchase a Blu-Ray from other retailers, but the deluxe digital edition remains more popular. According to statistics, despite some dissatisfaction with the shift to digital versions, more and more buyers are choosing them, including the more expensive options.
A similar trend is observed with pre-orders for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and Madden NFL 27. The live-service model further encourages the purchase of DLC both before and after release.
Economic Aspects and Market Prospects
Sony notes that assortment decisions are based on user preferences. Publishers are increasing profits by reducing production and shipping costs for physical media, including for GTA 6 on PS5. Digital editions with bonuses bring in additional revenue.
In the future, as the PS5 lifecycle progresses, users will be able to expand their game libraries in the PS Store. However, there may be challenges when transitioning to the new PS6 console if its price exceeds $1,000 due to memory shortages. By then, debates around physical media are expected to subside, and digital formats will likely solidify their position in the market.
