Brazil's largest oil company, Petrobras, plans to reach the productive reservoir at the Morpho exploration well, located in the environmentally sensitive Foz do Amazonas basin, within the next few weeks. Drilling operations recently overcame a challenging section, allowing progress toward the target depths to continue.

Drilling at the Morpho well on the FZA-M-59 block began in October 2025, following a lengthy licensing process for the project. In January, the company reported a discharge of approximately 18,440 liters of synthetic fluid into the ocean through two auxiliary lines connecting the Foresea ODN II drilling vessel to the well. In the days that followed, cleanup operations were carried out, and at the beginning of February, Petrobras received permission to resume drilling.

The Morpho well is among the five deepest ever drilled by the company. Operations are being conducted at a depth of nearly 3,000 meters, with a planned final depth of about 7,000 meters. The target reservoir lies just over 6,000 meters deep, and at the time of publication, drilling had reached approximately 5,000 meters. The project is being implemented in six stages; the company is currently in the fifth stage, having passed through a zone of abnormal pressure that required special attention.

Depending on the results of drilling at Morpho, Petrobras is considering drilling two additional wells on the FZA-M-59 block. Regardless of the outcome, once operations are complete, the ODN II drilling vessel will be sent to drill the Mae de Ouro exploration well on the POT-M-762 block in the Potiguar basin on the northern equatorial margin.

The company has already applied to the federal environmental agency Ibama to bring in a second drilling vessel, the Amaralina Star from Constellation Oil Services, to accelerate work in the region. Petrobras holds six blocks and has eight wells planned for drilling in this area, making an additional drilling rig essential to meet the planned workload.

Even if the Morpho and Mae de Ouro wells prove unproductive, Petrobras intends to continue exploration in the northern equatorial region, including the Foz do Amazonas, Para-Maranhão, Ceara, Barreirinhas, and Potiguar basins. Exploration activities will involve a comprehensive analysis of the area and assessment of the potential of several wells to obtain an objective picture of the territory's prospects.
