OpenAI is developing its first smartphone powered by artificial intelligence, with new leaks revealing some of its details. Mass production of the device is expected to begin in the first half of 2027. MediaTek is being considered as the main chipset supplier, and the smartphone is planned to feature the Dimensity 9600 processor.
MediaTek holds a leading position among chipset manufacturers for Android smartphones. The company’s latest flagship chipset, the Dimensity 9500, is used in models such as the Vivo X300, Oppo Find X9 Pro, and the gaming-focused OnePlus Turbo 6 Ultra. The Dimensity 9600 is projected to launch in the fourth quarter of 2026, ushering in a new generation of MediaTek chipsets. For the OpenAI smartphone, a customized version of the Dimensity 9600 is planned, based on TSMC’s N2P process technology and supporting LPDDR6 RAM and UFS 5.0 storage.
Among the device’s technical features are a dual NPU architecture and enhanced security functions, including pKVM and inline hashing. Forecasts suggest that combined shipments of OpenAI smartphones could reach 30 million units in 2027 and 2028.
According to earlier reports, the OpenAI smartphone will differ from traditional devices by allowing tasks to be performed directly, without the need for separate apps. At this time, OpenAI has not officially confirmed the development of a smartphone, so all presented information remains preliminary.
