Apple speeds up the delivery of device security updates
Apple has introduced the Background Security Improvements system, which allows small security updates to be installed on iPhone, iPad, and Mac between major OS releases. This innovation speeds up device protection without requiring a full system reinstall.
Crius
Apple has introduced the Background Security Improvements system, designed to deliver minor security updates to iPhone, iPad, and Mac users between major operating system releases.
System Overview
According to the published documentation, Background Security Improvements allows for the installation of individual security fixes outside the regular OS update schedule. This feature is supported starting with iOS 26.1, iPadOS 26.1, and macOS 26.1.
The system covers components such as the Safari browser, the WebKit framework stack, and other system libraries that can be updated without waiting for a full operating system release. Each update will include the release date, a list of affected components, and, if necessary, details about vulnerabilities (CVE).
How It Works
Background Security Improvements acts as an additional layer of protection, operating between major software updates. On supported devices, the option is available in the “Privacy & Security” section, where users can enable automatic installation of fixes. If automatic installation is disabled, changes will be applied with the next software update.
Apple’s platform security guide notes that the relevant content is stored in cryptex—cryptographically protected disk images on the preboot partition. These images can be updated with binary patches, allowing some security updates to be delivered without a complete OS reinstallation.
Application and Management
On macOS, updates related to Safari can take effect after restarting the browser, without requiring a full system reboot. Such updates consume less battery power compared to full software updates.
Background Security Improvements can be removed if an update causes a critical error or compatibility issue, restoring the device to the previously installed software version. In certain cases, Apple may temporarily remove the latest update through the automatic update mechanism.
For managed devices, mobile device management services can control automatic installation and track the versions of installed Background Security Improvements.
