The new Xbox may not be released until 2028.
Microsoft has unveiled new details about Project Helix—a hybrid console and PC based on Windows. Developers are expected to receive dev kits only in 2027, and the device itself may not launch before 2028.
Crius
Attendees at GDC 2026 were informed that game studios will receive Project Helix devkits in 2027. This could mean that the new Xbox console may not launch before the end of that year. However, if the Magnus-based system is similar to a Windows gaming PC, it will ensure compatibility with existing games.
Details about Project Helix
At GDC 2026, Microsoft shared additional information about Project Helix. It was announced that alpha versions of the hardware will only become available to developers in 2027, which could push the console’s release to 2028 or later. Previously, a 2027 launch was expected, but now there are concerns about whether partners will have enough time to optimize their games for the new Xbox platform.
Hardware and Software Features
During the event, it was noted that the provided tools are alpha hardware, not full-fledged devkits. The new Xbox console will differ from the Series X and PS5, as it is expected to run on a version of Windows, which means it will support modern PC games. In one of the presentations, studios were advised to develop Xbox projects on PC.
Hybrid Architecture and Launch Library
Project Helix is being developed as a hybrid between a console and a PC, and is expected to launch with an extensive starting library of games. Microsoft also plans to offer Xbox-exclusive projects that competitors won’t have. These could include games from previous generations, playable via compatibility layers or emulation. Despite a cross-platform strategy, a return to Xbox exclusives is possible.
Impact of Timelines and Hardware Limitations
If developers need to create projects specifically for the new hardware, receiving devkits on a tight schedule could be problematic. Another challenge is that the AMD Magnus APU chip, based on the RDNA 5 architecture, will not be available before 2027 and promises a significant performance boost.
Potential Delays and Forecasts
A memory shortage could also affect Microsoft’s plans. As a result, some analysts expect Helix to launch in 2028 or 2029. For comparison, Series X devkits only became widely available in early 2020. If history repeats itself, the new Xbox console could debut as early as the 2027 holiday season.
