Possible C1X Modem Malfunction in iPhone Air
Issue Report
Information has surfaced online about a potential malfunction of the C1X modem installed in the iPhone Air smartphone. The C1X modem was introduced by Apple last September alongside the launch of the iPhone Air.
History of Apple Modem Development
At the beginning of last year, Apple released the C1 modem for the iPhone 16e, marking a new chapter after moving away from Qualcomm modems. The new 5G modem was designed to improve energy efficiency, but it did not support mmWave 5G speeds. Later that same year, Apple unveiled the updated C1X modem, which, according to the company, offered 50% faster data transfer speeds and 30% lower power consumption compared to the previous version.
First Recorded Failure
On the r/iphone forum, a user reported an incident where an iPhone Air with a C1X modem experienced an error related to the absence of a mobile network. When checking the settings in the Mobile Diagnostics section, a notification appeared indicating a hardware issue with the iPhone and recommending contacting Apple Support. The user noted that attempts to restart the device, replace the SIM card, and reset network settings did not resolve the problem. It is currently unknown whether the malfunction was fixed or if the device was replaced.
Possible Consequences
This is the first documented case of a C1X modem failure. There is no information about widespread issues with this modem. It is also noted that the iPhone 17 series devices are more repair-friendly compared to previous generations, which could make it easier to address similar malfunctions in the future.
