After the God of War presentation at State of Play, an insider shared new details about the next installment in the renowned series. According to his information, a full-fledged sequel is currently in development, with Santa Monica Studio working under the direction of Cory Barlog.

New God of War Projects

At the State of Play event on February 12, Sony unveiled a variety of games, including two new titles set in the God of War universe. These projects are being developed by Santa Monica Studio (SMS) and Mega Cat Studios.

God of War: Sons of Sparta is a 2D platformer that had been rumored long before its official announcement. The second project is a remake of the original trilogy. However, according to insiders, Santa Monica Studio is also working on another major project that will continue the main storyline of the series.

Main Sequel Led by Cory Barlog

Insider shinobi602 clarified on the ResetEra forum that neither the remake nor the platformer is connected to Cory Barlog, who serves as the studio’s creative director and is responsible for the key entries in the God of War series, including the 2018 and 2022 releases. According to him, Barlog is currently leading a new main project that will continue the story begun in God of War 2018.

Details and Rumors About the New Game

The new game has been in development for some time and is being kept tightly under wraps. There are rumors that the story might be based on Egyptian mythology, though it’s still unclear how this will tie into the Norse themes of the previous games. The insider claims that the announcement could happen as early as this year, provided there are no delays. Possible venues for the reveal include the next State of Play in May or the Summer Game Fest organized by Geoff Keighley.

Expected Announcement and Release Dates

Shinobi602 is not certain about the exact announcement date but suggests that the studio is aiming for the second quarter of this year. As for the release date, the insider notes that SMS may opt for a short window between the announcement and the launch. This approach makes sense, as studios often try to release their major projects either well before or after the launch of GTA 6, which is expected in November this year.

Therefore, the new game could be released quite soon. Excluding the trilogy remake, this would be the second new God of War title to launch this year.
