Google speeds up the launch of Android 17: the beta is coming soon
Google is changing its Android release strategy for the first time: Android 17 will launch directly as a beta version, skipping the developer preview phase. Visual updates and stability improvements are expected, with testing set to begin in the coming days.
Crius
According to official information, Android 17, codenamed "Cinnamon Bun," is preparing for an imminent launch. In a surprising move, Google has decided to skip the developer preview phase, which was standard practice in the past, and go straight to beta testing. The first beta version is expected to become available for Pixel devices in the coming days.
Changes in Google’s Update Strategy
For the first time, Google is changing its approach to releasing new Android versions by dropping developer preview builds. As confirmed by company representatives on the official Reddit community r/android_beta, the Android 17 beta will be released very soon. This shift is linked to the adoption of the so-called canary build model, where developers work directly with the main development branch. This allows Google to reduce internal testing time and release beta versions to users more quickly. According to available information, Android 17 beta testing could begin around February 18.
Features of Android 17
The new Android 17 version, codenamed "Cinnamon Bun," is based on the stable Android 16 QPR (Quarterly Platform Release) build. So far, Google has not revealed details about new features, officially mentioning only "the latest bug fixes and improvements in stability and performance."
Expected Visual Changes
Rumors suggest that Android 17 may introduce noticeable visual updates. These could include more pronounced blur effects and a clearer separation between the notification panel and quick settings. The overall design is expected to move closer to the styles seen in Apple’s iOS and Xiaomi’s HyperOS. However, such changes are already sparking debate, especially among long-time Android users who prefer the platform’s traditional look.
How to Get Android 17 Beta
All Pixel device owners enrolled in the Android Beta Program will automatically receive Android 17 Beta 1 as an OTA update. Users who wish to remain on the stable Android 16 QPR3 version are advised to leave the beta program before beta testing begins. After the beta launches, Google will offer a "downgrade OTA" option, but this method is strongly discouraged as it results in a complete wipe of user data. A safe way to exit the beta program without losing data will only become available closer to the end of the beta cycle, which is expected in June 2026.
