Leica Q3 Monochrom: A New Era of Black-and-White Photography
Leica is preparing to release a new version of its popular Q3 camera—the Q3 43 Monochrom, designed exclusively for black-and-white photography. The new model is expected to offer improved performance at high ISO settings, enhanced sharpness, and support for color filters.

The Leica Q3 holds the top spot among the company's cameras, boasting sales figures that are more than double those of the entire Leica M system. In the coming months, a new version of this full-frame compact camera is expected to be released.
Leica has confirmed that the Q3 is its most sought-after model: over two-thirds of buyers choose the 28mm lens version, while the rest prefer the 43mm focal length option. According to available information, another modification—the Leica Q3 43 Monochrom—is planned for release this fall.
The exact launch date and technical specifications of the new camera have not yet been disclosed. Currently, Leica already offers the Q3 with a 28mm lens in a Monochrom version, so similar changes are anticipated for the Leica Q3 43 Monochrom. Notable features include the absence of the red Leica logo and colored markings on the lens and shutter speed dial. The main difference from the standard Q3 is the lack of a Bayer color filter in front of the sensor, allowing the camera to capture exclusively black-and-white photographs.
Despite its limited versatility, the Monochrom version offers three key advantages for photographers:
- The sensor without a Bayer filter delivers better performance at high ISO values, reducing noise during night shooting, with a maximum sensitivity of up to ISO 200,000.
- The absence of a color filter results in sharper images.
- The ability to use colored filters in front of the lens, as is common when shooting with black-and-white film.
