After the release of Halo: Campaign Evolved, Halo Studios has seen an increase in departures among its leadership, including producers and project managers. These changes come amid reports of ineffective management and uncertainty about the future of the Halo series. Preliminary data suggests that sales of the latest remake may not meet expectations.
Previously, the studio—known as 343 Industries—had already faced staffing instability. Layoffs of individual developers began after the launch of Halo: Campaign Evolved. While these losses have so far been isolated, they coincided with news of canceled projects and leadership issues. Sales of the Combat Evolved remake have shown mixed results across Xbox, PS5, and Steam platforms.
Social media reports indicate that several employees, including key specialists, have left the company. Although there have been no mass layoffs, it is noted that important team members are departing.
Producer Nick Traytman, who spent over six years at Halo Studios, announced his departure following the release of Halo: Campaign Evolved. He previously oversaw teams responsible for art, network features, and other areas, and led the multiplayer component of Halo Infinite. Traytman mentioned that he had previously avoided layoffs, but is now also leaving the studio.
Scrum Master Paul Morris, who held a key role in project management, also announced his exit after Halo: Campaign Evolved’s release. Software engineer Caleb Lawrence changed his status to “open to opportunities,” indicating he is seeking new employment.
In 2023, 343 Industries lost 95 employees, partly due to Halo Infinite’s underperformance. The company later underwent restructuring and was renamed Halo Studios in 2024. With Microsoft planning mass layoffs affecting over 3,000 Xbox employees, the situation remains uncertain.
During the development of the Combat Evolved remake, challenges arose, including complaints about management behavior and the closure of the Ekur multiplayer project. The future of the Halo series remains unclear.
Further layoffs may depend on the commercial success of Halo: Campaign Evolved. Currently, Microsoft has not made any definitive statements on the matter. According to analytics, initial Xbox sales are strong, but results on PS5 are below expectations, and the number of Steam players is lower than in previous franchise installments.
