Ubisoft is currently undergoing a series of changes in its development process, which has impacted the progress of several projects. The next main installment in the Far Cry series, Far Cry 7, was previously considered to include extraction shooter elements, but those plans have since been revised, and a different project within the franchise has now been approved.
According to recent reports, the Far Cry project codenamed Maverick, which was intended to be an extraction shooter, has been canceled. Earlier, it was reported that this game would feature a separate single-player campaign, but based on available information, only this part may have survived. Meanwhile, another Far Cry project, codenamed Kodiak and based on concepts from Maverick, completed its conceptualization phase at the beginning of this month and will be developed without extraction shooter elements.
Far Cry 7, known internally as Blackbird, remains in development and, according to current information, is progressing according to plan. The game is expected to feature a multiplayer mode, allowing several players to explore the game world together. Depending on its success, this project could mark the beginning of a new branch in the Far Cry franchise.
The Kodiak project is still in its early stages, and its release is several years away. Far Cry 7 was initially planned for release in the fall of 2025. The likelihood of a new Far Cry game launching this year is low, but there are still five months left until the end of the year. Ubisoft will need to carefully consider whether it makes sense to release a new game at the same time as GTA 6.
