Sony Interactive Entertainment and Santa Monica Studio announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 that God of War Laufey will be released exclusively for PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2027. During a special panel, details about the story and combat system were revealed, and it was confirmed that a new installment in the franchise featuring Kratos is already in development.

Story and Features of God of War Laufey

In this new game, the main character is Faye, Kratos’s wife, known among the Norse gods as Laufey the Just. The story picks up immediately after the events of Faye’s funeral, which opened God of War 2018. After her body is cremated by Kratos and Atreus, Faye finds herself in the realm of Everywhen—a kind of afterlife where fallen deities from various mythologies battle for power.

Faye discovers that the protective spells she left for her family are beginning to weaken. She must overcome hostile pantheons to ensure the safety of her son and husband. The game’s combat system will blend the fluid movements characteristic of the series’ Greek era with the heavier fighting style of the Norse saga.

Connection to Future Series Installments

The developers confirmed that the next main game in the series featuring Kratos is already in production and will be directly linked to the conclusion of Faye’s story in the world of Everywhen. The title, footage, and release date for the next Kratos game have not yet been announced.

Release Date and Physical Editions

God of War Laufey is set to launch during the busy release window at the start of 2027, alongside projects like Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, Persona 4 Revival, Fable, and Metro 2039. All these games are planned for release within two weeks of each other. A physical edition of God of War Laufey has also been confirmed and will be available for purchase until Sony ceases production of physical discs, which is scheduled for 2028.
