Farnborough International Airshow: Key Facts

General Information

The Farnborough International Airshow in the United Kingdom is considered one of the largest events in the global aerospace industry. The show regularly features major industry announcements and the signing of multi-billion-dollar contracts.

Scale and Organization

Every two years, the town of Farnborough in Hampshire becomes a hub for exhibitors, delegations, representatives of major industrial companies, politicians, media, and around 120,000 visitors from all over the world. Over five days, cutting-edge technologies are showcased and major deals are made, with volumes comparable to the GDP of some countries.

During the airshow, the city’s transport infrastructure experiences significant strain. Morning trains from London to Farnborough are often crowded, and staff with ticket scanners and instructions are present at the station. Special double-decker buses are used to transport guests, and traffic jams occur due to the large number of vehicles and temporary barriers. All hotels in the area are booked in advance, with some companies reserving accommodation for employees a year ahead. Strict security measures are in place at Farnborough Airport, with separate flows for visitors, exhibitors, and the press.

Historical Background

The first powered flight in the UK took place in Farnborough in 1908. The Royal Aircraft Establishment was located here, where Frank Whittle’s jet aircraft was developed in 1941, and the Concorde was built in the 1960s. Since 1948, the airshow has been held regularly, initially to showcase British aviation. In 1966, foreign aircraft with British components were allowed to participate, and since 1976, the show has become fully international.

Current Status

In 2026, the airshow will take place from July 20 to 24. Attendance has increased by 20%, and the number of exhibitors has grown by 15% compared to the previous 2024 show, reaching 1,636 companies, 63% of which are international. The exhibition area is equivalent to 78 football fields. In addition to five main pavilions, there are numerous exhibition zones and 28 international pavilions. Special attention is given to static aircraft displays and private areas for companies focused on securing contracts with major clients.

Most structures on the site are temporary: 4,000 contractors spend three months building facilities and infrastructure, which are dismantled after the event until the next show.

Exhibits and Participants

The airshow features leading global manufacturers such as Boeing, Airbus, Anduril, Rolls Royce, and others. Alongside major companies, numerous suppliers of components and services, as well as startups, participate. A dedicated area is devoted to the space industry. In the pavilions, visitors can explore the latest developments and learn about new technologies and trends in the aerospace sector.

Flight Demonstrations

Farnborough is renowned for its flight displays. The program includes modern aircraft such as the Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II, Eurofighter F-2000A Typhoon, Saab 340B Hybrid-Electric Testbed, Boeing CH-47F Chinook, as well as historic models like the Battle of Britain-era Spitfire.

Changes in Participation

In recent years, there has been a decline in participation from Chinese companies and an absence of Russian participants, due to changes in international politics and participation rules.

Conclusion

By the end of the airshow, the main deals have been signed and visitor numbers decrease. The town returns to its usual pace until the next event, which will take place in two years.
