Xbox Backward Compatibility for PC now allows you to play classic games from the original Xbox console on Windows devices. Microsoft has released an early version of this program, launching with four games: BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy. These titles are available to Windows 11 users, as well as on portable Windows-based devices like the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X.
The program is already available in early access and can be downloaded through the Xbox app on PC. All four games can be purchased individually or accessed with any Xbox Game Pass subscription at no extra cost. Owners of digital licenses for these games on console will automatically receive access to their PC versions thanks to the Xbox Play Anywhere feature.
In the future, Microsoft plans to expand the list of supported games and introduce an achievements system. Achievement support will be added later, including for the four games already available.
Xbox Backward Compatibility was first launched in 2015 to enable Xbox 360 and original Xbox games to run on newer consoles. After development was paused in 2019, Microsoft brought the concept to PC, starting with a limited selection of classic titles.
To run these games on PC, you’ll need at least a GeForce GTX 950, Radeon RX 550, Intel UHD 770, or Intel Arc A310 graphics card, a quad-core processor (such as Core i3-8100, Ryzen 3 1200, or Ryzen Z2 A), 8 GB of RAM, and Windows 11. For a smoother experience, it’s recommended to use a GeForce GTX 1070 Ti or Intel Arc A770, along with a six-core processor (for example, Core i5-10400, Ryzen 5 3600, or Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme). These requirements are considered modest by today’s standards, especially since these are older games with updated graphics.
The PC version includes enhancements tailored for modern devices: support for up to four times the original resolution, VSync, fullscreen and windowed modes, anisotropic filtering, improved anti-aliasing, and options to adjust language and audio settings.
