Capcom has announced the release date for the new installment of the samurai action franchise Onimusha: Way of the Sword. The game will be available on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X starting September 25, 2026. During the PlayStation State of Play event in June 2026, a 30-minute demo for PlayStation 5 was also showcased.
This new game is not a direct sequel to the previous PlayStation 2 titles but rather a reboot of the series. The storyline involving Oda Nobunaga has concluded, and the action now moves to Kyoto during the Edo period. The legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi takes center stage as the main protagonist.
The game retains its supernatural threats despite the shift in historical era. The sinister Genma spirits from Japanese legends make a return. To combat them, Musashi uses both his swordsmanship skills and newly acquired Oni powers, which grow stronger as he collects souls.
The latest teaser shows Musashi gaining magical abilities and hints at dark forces behind the demonic threat. The trailer features a boss battle atop Mount Oe and a confrontation with the antagonist Dokyo, who creates new Genma in his laboratory.
The PS5 demo offers a 30-minute gameplay segment where players can test Musashi’s combat abilities against waves of Genma and face off against the rival swordsman Ganryu.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword will be Capcom’s fourth major AAA release in 2026, following Resident Evil: Requiem, Pragmata, and Monster Hunter Stories 3.
