Netflix is in talks to potentially increase the number of National Football League (NFL) games in its broadcast package from two to four. The streaming service is considering the possibility of airing a game on the eve of Thanksgiving, as well as an international game, which is likely to take place during the first week of the season.
Currently, the company is in the final year of a three-year contract to broadcast Christmas games, for which it has been paying around $75 million per game.
The NFL regained the rights to four games as part of last year's deal to sell NFL Network to Disney’s ESPN and to acquire a stake in that sports service. The first international game of the season is also available for purchase, after the NFL had offered it as a separate product for the past two seasons.
The league is taking a flexible approach to selling broadcast rights and is open to offers for part or all of the package from various potential buyers. Up to five games could be split among several services.
