Sony May Limit the Release of Story-Driven Games on PC

Analysis has shown a decline in interest among PC gamers for PlayStation exclusives, which could lead to fewer single-player Sony games being released on PC. The company is considering keeping story-driven projects exclusively on its own consoles.

A new analysis has revealed that some PC users have expressed dissatisfaction with Sony's cross-platform policy. Recent PlayStation exclusives have generated less interest among PC gamers compared to earlier ports. Due to low sales, Sony is considering keeping single-player PS5 games exclusive to its own console.

The reasons for a potential reduction in the number of single-player ports to PC are being discussed within the industry. One theory is that former PS4 and PS5 exclusives have not attracted the expected audience. A Newzoo study indicates that the lack of simultaneous releases on both console and PC has become a significant factor.

An analysis published on GamesIndustry.biz showed that the share of PC players in several PlayStation games was significantly lower than on consoles. In the first three months after release, Steam and Epic Games Store users accounted for only 13% of the total game audience. By comparison, for AAA games from other publishers released simultaneously on multiple platforms, this figure reached 44%.

This trend was observed regardless of whether the game was an exclusive from PlayStation’s internal or external studios. According to Newzoo, PC gamers’ interest in SIE releases decreases as the wait time for a PC version increases.

Earlier ports were more successful: in 2020, Horizon Zero Dawn accounted for 22% of PC players. God of War and Marvel’s Spider-Man also attracted a significant number of PC gamers. However, sequels like God of War Ragnarok and Spider-Man 2 did not receive similar support. At the same time, new franchises such as Ghost of Tsushima in 2024 have shown better results.

Helldivers 2 became the most popular PlayStation exclusive on PC. According to Alinea Analytics, as of November 2025, this game accounted for 12.7 million out of 43 million copies of Sony-published games sold on Steam. The company is showing greater interest in porting live-service projects. However, Newzoo did not distinguish between single-player and multiplayer games in its analysis.

As part of its cross-platform strategy, Sony has not released story-driven projects on PC on launch day. SIE management previously stated that such PS5 exclusives would remain on the console for a longer period. For example, with the game Marathon, it is clear that live-service projects will likely be an exception.

The company aims to maintain incentives for purchasing its own hardware, which apparently will not change as Sony seeks buyers for the PS6. Considering Valve’s commission and weak sales, the costs of porting games like Ghost of Yōtei or Marvel’s Wolverine may prove unjustified.
