PlayStation will limit the release of exclusives on PC
Sony is revising its strategy for releasing PlayStation 5 exclusives on PC: some single-player titles are no longer planned for release on Steam due to declining sales and increased competition. Multiplayer games will remain available on PC, and some independent releases will still appear on the platform.
Crius
PC users have grown accustomed to PlayStation 5 single-player exclusives eventually becoming available on Steam. However, according to recent reports, this practice may change due to declining sales and the emergence of a new Xbox console.
Changes in PlayStation Strategy
Recently, there have been signs that PlayStation is rethinking its approach to cross-platform releases. In particular, it has become known that some PS5 single-player exclusives will not be ported to PC. Among these projects are Wolverine, Ghost of Yōtei, and Saros, which are not planned for release on Steam.
Reasons for Adjusting Plans
Sony’s plans for releasing games on PC are constantly being reviewed. One reason for the reduced focus on PC support is that sales of some exclusives have fallen short of expectations. Although Sony has earned over $1.5 billion in gross revenue on Valve’s platform, a significant portion of this came from the multiplayer game Helldivers 2.
Additionally, desktop and portable PC owners have expressed frustration over long release delays and the requirement to create PSN accounts to access games.
Impact of Competition and Future Plans
PlayStation is reconsidering its exclusivity strategy in light of the upcoming Xbox console, which runs on Windows and supports Steam and other launchers. The Valve Steam Machine is also present in the market, aiming to bring game libraries into living rooms. With the development of the PS6 underway, Sony is looking to keep its in-house studio projects exclusive to its own platform.
The Situation with Anticipated Games
The cancellation of the Ghost of Yōtei port may disappoint users who were hoping to see it on Steam, especially after Ghost of Tsushima launched on the platform in May 2024. Marvel’s Wolverine, scheduled for release in September 2026, is also not planned for PC. The shooter Saros will remain a PS5 exclusive after its debut on April 30.
Prospects for PC Gamers
Sony is not completely abandoning the PC audience. After the release of Death Stranding 2 from Hideo Kojima’s independent studio, a PC version is also expected. In 2026, Kena: Scars of Kosmora from Ember Lab is planned for PC release. Most multiplayer projects will continue to be available on PC, as cross-platform games immediately attract a wide audience.
