Final Fantasy 7 Remake Makes PC a Priority
Square Enix is now focusing on PC as the main platform for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 to achieve the highest possible graphics quality, although support for Sony consoles will remain. This strategy is driven by both technical and economic reasons.
Crius
Square Enix has shifted its priority platform for the Final Fantasy series: now, the developers are aiming to make Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 as impressive as possible specifically on PC. While the studio continues to optimize the game for PS5 and PS5 Pro, console owners may have to settle for less detailed game worlds.
A New Direction
In an interview with Automaton, Final Fantasy 7 Remake director Naoki Hamaguchi spoke about the company’s new multi-platform strategy. Discussing the conclusion of the trilogy, he emphasized that developing for less powerful systems will not affect the quality of the game on other platforms. Nevertheless, PlayStation fans may be surprised that the studio is now prioritizing PC.
Why PC Was Chosen
Hamaguchi called PC “the most technologically advanced gaming environment,” where the best possible graphics quality can be achieved. According to him, many players have noticed that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth looks better on PC and laptops than on PS5. This was intentional: the developers created assets for the most powerful processors and graphics cards.
The Square Enix veteran also noted that PS5 and PS5 Pro are “mid-range platforms.” On consoles, texture sizes and polygon counts may be noticeably lower. Switch 2 and Steam Deck present even greater challenges, but even on Sony’s flagship devices, some details are partially reduced.
Economic and Technical Reasons
Square Enix’s move toward PC gaming is driven not only by technical limitations. Hamaguchi explained that the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy saw a significant sales boost thanks to Steam and the Epic Games Store. Given the vast potential audience, it makes sense to focus on these players.
For the director, PC versions are no longer just a way to expand the audience long after release—a departure from the publisher’s previous policy. When the first part of the trilogy launched in 2020, it was a PlayStation exclusive for PS4. Later, in 2021, the updated Remake Integrade version appeared on PS5 and PC.
The Future of Releases and Fan Reactions
Rebirth had a shorter exclusivity period before coming to PC. According to rumors, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 will launch simultaneously on all platforms. This approach could benefit the company, though some fans may feel left out.
The Final Fantasy series has traditionally generated the most revenue on Sony consoles. Even if PC becomes the main platform for Part 3, Hamaguchi has assembled teams to ensure each version meets player expectations. Hopefully, PS5 owners won’t experience frame rate drops or blurry visuals as with the previous installment. Thanks to PSSR upscaling technology, graphics have improved in the PS5 Pro version.
